Calculating the range
How far you can travel on one battery charge depends not just on the battery capacity (shown in watt-hours). In addition to the size of the battery, the strength of the motor and the assistance level selected, the topography, road surface, pedaling frequency, tire pressure, outside temperature and total weight also have a decisive influence on the range of your e-bike. Our partners for e-bike drive technology (FIT and Bosch) strive to provide reliable range forecasts in real time on your display.
The range assistant from Bosch shows the influence of the various factors very well. Give it a try and see how the range is affected by the different factors. To the range calculator
Tips for optimizing the range
In addition to the external factors, you can do a few things yourself to optimize the range. We have summarized the eight most important points for you.
- Avoid stopping and starting!
- Shift down a gear
- Offload heavy items
- Check your tire pressure.
- Lubricate the chain properly.
- The route to your destination – pay attention to the terrain and route profile!
- Protect the battery from the cold and charge it properly
- Extend your range with additional batteries

1. Avoid stopping and starting!
Similar to driving a car, frequent starts and stops waste energy unnecessarily when e-biking. So cycle with foresight and a constant pedaling frequency. A uniform pressure on the pedals ensures a uniform signal to the motor. This saves energy and increases the range of your e-bike.

2. Shift down a gear
Cycling becomes a relaxing affair thanks to the motor assistance. However, the pedaling frequency should not be too low. The efficiency of the e-bike motor increases with higher pedaling frequencies. To increase the range, we recommend shifting down a gear and pedaling faster. A pedaling frequency of 80 revolutions per minute optimizes power consumption and extends the range.

3. Offload heavy items
Heavy luggage and loads affect the range of your e-bike. The higher the total weight, the lower the range. So think carefully about what you actually need before your tour and leave heavy items at home.

4. Check your tire pressure
Having the right tire pressure is also decisive for the range of your e-bike battery. Cycling on firm, hard surfaces – such as on a paved road – with too little air in the tires increases the friction. You should therefore make sure that you always have enough pressure in your tires. The situation is completely the opposite when cycling off road. A lower air pressure is important, especially on a mountain e-bike, so that the power drive can be transferred to the ground.
Your specialist dealer will be happy to help you determine the optimum air pressure and if you have any further questions.

5. Look after your bike!
Friction kills the range. In addition to checking the correct tire pressure, the chain and other drive components should also be checked regularly. It is best to clean the chain with a dry cloth and then apply some chain oil. Our FLYER maintenance course offers even more tips on looking after your e-bike. To take care of your bike, it is also worth bringing it to your specialist dealer for a general check-up on a regular basis.

6. The route to your destination – pay attention to the terrain and route profile!
The shortest or fastest route is not always the most efficient. The motor has to work more on steep inclines and thus consumes more energy. Maybe you can take a short detour to avoid a steep incline or some stops at traffic lights. The road surface also influences rolling resistance. If you ride on a paved road, the resistance is significantly lower than on a gravel road.

7. Protect the battery from the cold and charge it properly
An e-bike battery prefers to work in a temperature range of ten to twenty-five degrees. When it gets cold, remember to take the battery inside with you into the warm, even during extended lunch breaks or at work. What's more, you should only charge the battery once it has reached room temperature. In cold temperatures, it may be a good idea to switch to high assistance modes. The higher discharge current causes the battery to heat up itself and provides better protection against the cold.
Do not ride until the battery is completely empty, but recharge it whenever it is has a ten-percent charge left. Some e-bikes let you set a corresponding mode to maintain the battery performance and lifetime for as long as possible.

8. Extend your range with additional batteries
Some FLYER e-bikes are compatible with range extenders or dual battery systems. These additional batteries can be attached directly to the down tube and increase your radius during trips on your e-bike. Alternatively, it could be worth buying a second battery. Buy the additional or second battery from your local FLYER specialist dealer, who will be happy to advise you on your options.
